After the rains
Floral orbs hover over outback landscapes after drenching rains bring the desert to life.
After the rains is collection of works by Oliver Gerhard, exhibited in August 2022 as part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival.
The works are inspired by Oliver's journeys through the arid regions surrounding Lake Torrens, the second largest of South Australia's magnificent, ephemeral salt lakes.
In the winter of 2014, he spent nearly three weeks hiking along its western shore with his sister-in-law, Bron Cunningham and Susie Barr, a friend. Not only was the unique landscape beautiful, but being there for three weeks made the experience richer for him. He was able to see, hear and feel some of the natural rhythms and cycles that have shaped the environment over the aeons and observe the way plants, animals, rocks and other things in the landscape, including objects and traces left by humans, respond or succumb to those rhythms. Since then, he has felt a growing connection with the region, to the point where its features have acquired a sacredness for him.
Oliver has elevated the viewer's experience with Augmented Reality (AR) enhancements, animations and soundscapes. See below for instructions on how to experience these.
The soundscapes were composed by Simon Koehn using synthesisers. Simon is an Adelaide based sound designer with a Bachelor’s degree in Sonic Arts (Hons) from the University of Adelaide. For more information about Simon visit simonkoehn.com
